CSR AND SUSTAINABILITY

At school, when we read the word ‘sustainability’ in our social sciences’ book , I hardly understood how can a normal being whose daily life is restricted to use his personal vehicle and water in a particular amount, can sustainably use the resources. I thought we need to acknowledge our need for resources to maintain our modern way of life. It is very hard to switch our way of living collectively until rules and regulations made otherwise by the government to stop us from violating the use of these resources and protect them for our future generations to come. I thought about this when I was 10 years old. But, hardly could make out any solution to help people understand and enact the ideal way to live, because, “How am I supposed to know it all?” . By interrogating myself with this question I restricted myself to work on it.

As a child and up until now I’ve kept a way of living to help myself consume as less as I can. But my individual efforts are criticized and revolted against every now and then.

Few years later when I reached my high school we came across the term CSR,  Corporate Social Responsibility’, but I took no notice of how strongly this term could play. CSR policy functions as a self-regulatory mechanism whereby a business monitors and ensures its active compliance with the spirit of the law, ethical standards and national or international norms. With some models, a firm’s implementation of CSR goes beyond compliance and statutory requirements, which engages in “actions that appear to further some social good, beyond the interests of the firm and that which is required by law”. I overlooked this term thinking how good a role or how transparent could an organization keep such social works, failing to understand how even we could take initiatives to work along with corporates which would help every sector or cause that needs to be looked after.

Together CSR and Sustainability includes economic viability, environmental integrity, and social responsiveness. These include programs, processes, activities, and products that enable organizations not only to deliver long-term economic or financially-beneficial returns, but improvements in environmental and social systems.

During my recent internship at NHPC Ltd. I came across the ways this public company has looked after helping villages, schools and environment in different ways over the years. When I came to know how CSR has played a major part in this particular company, I researched and learned how individuals, NGO’s and agencies have taken up their individual ideas and sectors that need help, alongwith corporates as CSR partners to give the world a better outlook.

Some of the efforts for sustainability which have been well recognized all over the world are:

The above mentioned initiatives and ideas are only a few out of the bucket filled by thousands. We understand by this, that people do care about, THE PRIMARY GOALS OF SUSTAINABILITY, which are:

  • The end of poverty and hunger
  • Better standards of education and healthcare – particularly as it pertains to water quality and better sanitation
  • To achieve equality
  • Sustainable economic growth while promoting jobs and stronger economies
  • All of the above and more while tackling the effects of climate change, pollution and other environmental factors that can harm and do harm ecosystems as well as peoples health, livelihoods and lives.
  • Sustainability to include health of our biosphere.

    Connecting for a better world

All of this helped me understand that things will eventually fall into their place only if we try to imply them. People could come forefront connecting to solve the global issues and promote an economic and environmental friendly standard of living. It is absolutely flawless how every individual effort counts. We do not know who and where down the line might observe and nurture our lifestyle or initiatives into their own.

The surrounding environment is the best erudite master to teach us the fundamental laws of nature and the basics of living in life. Let us develop the best for our future generations to come.
